Sony Axes Accolades On PS5

Sony is to ditch the Accolades feature in PS5 online gaming. It wasn’t widely used, though it’s not clear how many people even knew it existed.

The feature let online gamers award badges to other players, whether teammate or opponent. The accolades acknowledged positive gaming traits such as being “Helpful”, “Welcoming” or a “Good sport.”

While it might seem trivial, Sony had put a bit of work into making sure it operated as intended without people gaming the system. Players could only give the badges anonymously, couldn’t give them to existing online friends, and couldn’t give more than one badge to the same player in a 12-hour period.

Sony says it will drop the feature in the fall because it “hasn’t seen the level of usage we anticipated, so we are refocusing our efforts.” It added, perhaps optimistically, “We encourage the community to continue to send positive messages to one another. “

Feedback has been mixed, with many players noting they’d never heard of the feature, one admitting they awarded them sarcastically, and another suggesting Sony could have promoted the concept by having game trophies for handing out a certain number of Accolades.

Another suggestion was that the Accolades a player had received could be taken into account for automated matchmaking.
