Hey there fan boys and fan girls! Have you ever heard of the Fantasia Festival? Held each summer in Montreal, Quebec, it is an international genre film festival that celebrates all facets of cinema.
Holding its 25th edition this year, we attended the world premiere of Director Marc Joly-Corcoran’s “May The Fan Be With You”, a documentary about the impact of Star Wars on fans of the legendary franchise and the evolution of geek culture, that is now normalized and celebrated throughout the world.
Joly-Corcoran, a big fan of the franchise, followed a trio of Quebec Star Wars fans for five years, guerilla style, from convention to convention, with a wonderful glimpse of their normal lives, even visiting Tunisia, in search for Luke’s home on Tatooine.
We meet these fans, united by their passion for George Lucas’ creation. All of them collectors and members of the now famous 501st Legion, the documentary shows a very human side of the fan world. They not only share their passion with us, but they also let us into their lives. There is Malgus, an IT support technician, who becomes commander of the local chapter of the 501st and collector of Star Wars memorabilia who is a reference to friends when it comes to figurines. There are also Jef and his wife Kim, parents of two teen boys, who are well known around the province for their cosplays, their online show about Star Wars and their collections exhibitions. Finally we meet Steeve, First Nation’s family man and business owner that lives for his passion for his culture and Star Wars.
Although a bit technical at first, giving the viewer all the necessary information to be well versed in what is to come, we quickly become attached to these people who allowed Joly-Corcoran to follow them in the ebb and flow of their lives for five years.
Joly-Corcoran manages to tell us a wonderful story, showing a very touching side of the fan community, letting us forget we are watching a documentary. Through a life crisis, a return to school, a desire of change in the established order, a huge fire destroying a life-long business, we see the evolution of the circle of love and friendship, as one of the characters so eloquently puts it. These friendships extending now beyond the galaxy’s edge.
Winner of Fantasia’s Silver Audience Award 2022 for Best Documentary, May the Fan Be With You is a must see for all! Here is the official traier, subtitled in English.
A new gaming “platform” is already averaging 1.7 million daily users. But many are calling that a bomb because the platform is Netflix.
Analytics company Apptopia says that since the launch last November, Netflix games have totalled 23.3 million downloads, with an average of 1.7 million people playing on any given day. They also say the figures dropped after the launch but have been climbing since May.
Most of the coverage has focused on the fact that 1.7 million users is less than one percent of Netflix’s subscriber base. That’s true, though doesn’t really account for the number of Netflix users who either don’t know about the games or have no interest in playing them. (Indeed, there’s a good chance most Netflix users don’t even watch its videos daily.)
The quality and range of games (24, with plans to rise to 50 by the end of the year) is no doubt a big factor, but analysts have also pointed to the availability and convenience. The games are free to Netflix subscribers but only available on mobile devices and must be downloaded from app stores rather than being accessible through the same software used for watching Netflix videos.
Ultimately what really matters is whether the costs of running the service (including $72 million to buy developer Next Games) are worth it for however many people see the games as a positive when deciding whether to sign up to, or avoid cancelling, a subscription. Given the Next Games purchase is equivalent to nearly five million annual subscriptions on the standard plan, there’s certainly some way to go.
