Remembering Peter Mayhew: Star Wars Actors Pay Tribute to the Original Chewbacca

Yesterday evening, we learned that Peter Mayhew, the actor behind the one and only Chewbacca, passed away a few days before on April 30th at the age of 76. Naturally, in the hours that followed, some of his Star Wars co-stars had to pay tribute to the man. Here are a few of them.

Harrison Ford wrote this statement to The Hollywood Reporter:

Peter Mayhew was a kind and gentle man, possessed of great dignity and noble character. These aspects of his own personality, plus his wit and grace, he brought to Chewbacca. We were partners in film and friends in life for over 30 years and I loved him. He invested his soul in the character and brought great pleasure to the Star Wars audience. Chewbacca was an important part of the success of the films we made together. He knew how important the fans of the franchise were to its continued success and he was devoted to them. I and millions of others will never forget Peter and what he gave us all. My thoughts are with his dear wife Angie and his children. Rest easy, my dear friend.

From Joonas Suotamo (The new Chewbacca):

From Carrie Fisher’s daughter, Billie Lourd:

And from George Lucas, via THR as well:

Peter was a wonderful man. He was the closest any human being could be to a Wookiee: big heart, gentle natureโ€ฆand I learned to always let him win. He was a good friend and Iโ€™m saddened by his passing.

R.I.P. Peter Mayhew – The One and Only Chewbacca (1944 – 2019)

It is with great sadness that we learned the passing of Peter Mayhew.

Surrounded by his family at his North Texas home, the gentle giant passed away late last evening, April 30th.

Peter Mayhew portrayed our favorite Wookiee from “A New Hope” up until “The Force Awakens” and the now classic “Star Wars Holiday Special” He is seldom known for other roles, but made guest appearances in The Muppet Show and Glee and played the Tall Knight in Dark Towers.

Fans will be able to honor Mayhew in early December, in Los Angeles, at EmpireCon.

SONIC THE HEDGEHOG Director Jeff Fowler Confirms They Are Changing The Character Design

After only 24 hours after its official release, director Jeff Fowler confirms they will change Sonic The Hedgehog’s movie character design.

If, like us, you were a bit creeped out by the much too humanoid version of our favorite ring catcher, this comes as excellent news! (Pictured above)

We are all for creating amazing movies and adapting to a vision but this one went a bit too far. We were reminded of the now classic Super Mario Bros and of its poor movie adaptation. Maybe we are just nostalgic gamers, but we must thank the powers that be for the internet and its persuasive nature. If you are going to go old school, respect the character design. After all, that’s exactly what they did for Detective Pikachu!
