In an unexpected turn of events, the satirical news giant The Onion has acquired the infamous conspiracy theory site Infowars, following its bankruptcy auction. The deal, which closed earlier this week, marks the latest bizarre twist in the media landscape as The Onion plans to turn the once notorious site into a satirical haven for absurd and over-the-top internet humor.

According to sources familiar with the sale, The Onion intends to shut down Infowars’ existing operations and rebuild it from the ground up, all while maintaining the website’s heritage of engaging in “very funny, very stupid” content. This shift is expected to take Infowars from a polarizing source of disinformation to a playground for internet humor, where outlandish conspiracy theories will be flipped on their head in the name of comedy.

From NBC News:

The Onion plans to shutter Jones’ InfoWars and rebuild the website featuring well-known internet humor writers and content creators, according to a person with knowledge of the sale.

Jones, 50, one of the most-high profile and financially successful alternative media personalities, built a small empire off a radio show-turned-internet video operation centered around the Infowars brand that focused on false and often bizarre claims about grand conspiracies and government wrongdoing.
