Lego to Replace Oil Plastics in Its Bricks with Renewable Materials

Red Lego Brick

Lego is stepping up its sustainability game with a new initiative! Despite a recent setback with recycled plastic, Lego is now making a new move to reduce the oil content in its bricks. By investing in certified renewable resin, it aims to cut down on its environmental impact, even if it means higher costs.

Now, Lego is aiming to gradually bring down the oil content in its bricks by paying up to 70% more for certified renewable resin, the raw plastic used to manufacture the bricks, in an attempt to encourage manufacturers to boost production.

Will that 70% increase affect the price of new Lego sets? This remains to be seen.

CEO Niels Christiansen revealed that more than half of the resin used by 2026 will be sustainably sourced, a major leap from just 30% in early 2024. With rivals like Hasbro and Mattel also embracing sustainable plastics, the pressure is on—but Lego seems up for the challenge!
