Fortnite To Run World Championship Tournament With $100 Million in Prize Money

Fortnite is to run a world championship tournament with $100 million in prize money. It will be largely based on solo and duos play rather than professional league teams.

The tournament will be known as the Fortnite World Cup, with qualifiers beginning this fall and the ‘World Cup’ itself coming in late 2019.

It’s far from a winner take all affair, with the prize money to be “split between many events at different levels of competition around the globe.” The precise format hasn’t yet been confirmed, though “play will focus on Solos and Duos, but there’ll be plenty of opportunities to squad-up in competition, too.”

The emphasis certainly seems to be on the idea that anyone has a chance to win the whole thing, rather than it being a professional team based league.

The announcement came as makers Epic revealed that Fortnite now has 125 million users, though it didn’t specify if that is registered, active or regular players.

If you got excited or confused by the mention of ‘World Cup’, don’t worry: Fortnite is getting a couple of football-related updates. There’ll be customizable skins that let you wear the shirt of your favorite player. There’s also a new football stadium coming to the map, though it appears to have a considerably smaller capacity than a real World Cup arena. It’s not clear yet if there’s any opportunity for a kickaround or if it’s just a different scene to admire as you are slaughtered.
