As some of you may have noticed, I did my Resident Evil 7 review in three parts for this site. First 4 hours, middle three hours, and now, the last four or so hours of RE7. Truth is, if you asked me right now my overall thoughts on the game it would be a high 8 out of 10. As I stated prior, the scares were genuine, the tension was LITERALLY oozing from the walls, and the Bakers were just very well executed game villains. They honestly freaked me out, which added a level of realism to the game.
BUT (and there is always a but)…..
The last four hours of RE7 just do not hold a flickering candle to the first half at all. This is topped off with a disgustingly easy boss fight with an overly generic wad of living meat and it just did not live up to the William Birkins of the past (only true fans will get that ref). I also hate to say it, but outside of a couple umbrella logos and a Chris Redfield cameo, there felt like very little of this connected to the rest of the RE world. But that is okay because, at the end of the day, a weak final stretch and crappy final boss does not take away from the horror masterpiece that is Resident Evil 7.
Odd how close it end up being to the game F.e.a.r, though, huh? A FPS game where you are trying to escape a psychic demon child capable of world destruction.
Great game, though, and with some free DLC promised for Spring that WILL give us time in an old fave’s shoes, RE7 was just what we needed from this series. Just wish that final boss wasn’t such a turd.
