The built in navigation systems in many Lexus vehicles have been hit by a “purple screen of death.” Despite some initial excitement, the problem appears to be a failed software update rather than hacking.
While reports from owners are mixed, it appears the problem may affect all Lexi (to give the correct plural) from 2014 and later. One owner video shows the navigation system simply brings up a flashing purple screen before resetting. Other reports suggest audio and temperature controls may also be affected.
As of press time, the latest comment from Lexus read “Many of our owner’s vehicle head units stopped working. We are working around the clock to find a solution. Stay tuned for more information.”
A spokesman for the company that some call the Japanese Mercedes says it was likely a mistake with an over-the-air software update. While some users have reportedly fixed it by briefly disconnecting the battery, Lexus is currently uncertain if it will be able to rectify it with another mass update or if it will have the headache of sending customers to dealerships for a manual fix.
