I really loved the movie and I’m going to go and see it a second time next week, but there are two things that have annoyed me a little about the film. OK, you’ve been warned! I loved the new film, but there is one thing that made little sense to me, and another about a character that I thought would have had more screen time.
First: Rey discovers that she has the force about halfway through the film. The problem is that she starts using her powers almost right away like someone who’s had plenty of training time with the Force before. She uses Force Pull, she reads Kilo Ren’s mind, and uses the famous Jedi mind trick on a Stormtrooper. I understand that doing this was probably required to get the new trilogy going, but to get to that point, Luke Skywalker had to receive some basic training by Obi Wan Kenobi and spend at least a week on Degobah with Master Yoda.
Second: Is Captain Phasma the new Boba Fett? The character has about 2 minutes of screen time total and does nothing significant in the whole movie… except getting captured and putting her whole base at risk by deactivating the shield that protects it. That’s about it. After looking at the trailer a few months ago, I was expecting her to be a badass elite fighting machine, but no, she’s only eye candy it seems, unless Disney gives her a more significant role in Episode VIII and IX, which I hope they do.
So, what do you guys think? Did you love the movie? Do you agree with me on the two points above? Let me know in the comments below!
