Carvana: Cars Delivered By a Robotic Vending Machine

Nashville is now home to a vending machine that dispenses cars rather than candy. And yes, it is a massive gimmick.

It’s operated by a company called Carvana which lets customers buy cars online without having to deal with sales staff in person, whether that be because they dislike pushiness and pressure, or are just anti-social.

The company offers a choice of delivery or pickup and has just opened its second pickup site, in Nashville. To make the pickup a bit more fun, customers don’t sit around waiting for a sales rep to get the car from a lot and bring it round front.

Instead they insert an oversized coin into a slot above a computer display and then watch as the car is automatically retrieved from a multi-story tower and brought to a delivery bay in a wonderfully over-the-top robotic manner.

For the most part it’s a promotional gimmick and the company even gives customers a personalized video of their car’s delivery, the idea being they share it on social media. Indeed, Carvana wants to make it such an experience that they will even pay customers $200 towards airfare to Nashville and then drive them from the airport to the vending machine.

The only obvious practical benefit is that storing the cars in a tower saves on the amount of land the company needs on the site.
