When Van Lake in Condon, Mont. freezes over, it looks like perfectly smooth, transparent glass. YouTuber Doc Martin recently skated across the lake on Thanksgiving — he calls it “glass skating” — and you can see not just the water, plants and rocks frozen in time, but also the beautiful Montana landscape reflected on its surface. When Martin aims the camera at his feet for a skating point-of-view, it looks like cinematic trickery as he glides effortlessly, the serene lake life whirring by underneath him. Instead, it’s beautiful, real life nature, and that’s better than any award-winning visual effect.
