Late Monday night, actor-director Joseph Gordon-Levitt confirmed via Twitter that he was officially attached to an film adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s Sandman series.
Ladies and gentlemen, I'm incredibly honored to be working with David Goyer, Warner Bros, and @neilhimself on SANDMAN. #Prelude

UPDATE: Deadline has also revealed (not confirmed, as reported by Tor.com) that JGL may not only be producing the film, but directing it AND also playing the title role himself. David S. Goyer (Blade trilogy, Dark Knight trilogy, Dark City, Man of Steel) will helm the script.
Do you think, based on JGL’s tweet, that the movie will be based on Preludes & Nocturnes, the first book in the Sandman series, leading to Warner Bros.’ hope that it has a new franchise on its hands?
